Chocolate Applesauce Cake

2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp allspice
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 cups applesauce
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup hot water
2 tbsp cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup walnuts

Cream sugar and shortening together. Add applesauce and vanilla. Dissolve cocoa and baking soad in hot water. Sift dry ingredients together and add to sugar and egg mixture alternately with water solution. Add raisins and nuts if desired. Chocolate chips may be substituted for raisins and nuts. Bake in a 9x13 pan at 350. cool and ice with chocolate frosting.
